Drive By Photo

Next door to The Hive is the Hampton Inn in White Rock. Took this photo on the way out of the parking lot. The Bandelier Inn use to be here. It was torn down to make room for the new (modern) Hampton Inn. It is usually full with visiting Lab workers and contractors. Once in a while, movie stars stay here during filming in the area.

Inside The Hive

Casual sitting area with freeWifi if you buy some goodies (coffee, tea, etc.). The Hive, in White Rock, also has conference rooms of various sizes for rent by the hour, day, week, month. The Hive is also equipped with equipment for machining your next great invention. The Hive is also on Facebook

Pizza Hut

The Pizza Hut in White Rock has been closed for several years with no one moving into the empty building. It was closed long before the Hampton Inn next door replaced the old Bandelier Inn. The Pizza Hut in Los Alamos also closed several years ago as well. But there, a new business moved in. I think now it is a branch of the Los Alamos Medical Center where blood can be drawn for diagnosis.

Successful and Growing Business in White Rock

At one end of the shopping area that is for sale (posted yesterday) is the Bilingual Montessori School which recently moved to this location. Even more recently they expanded and opened a second facility just across the parking lot.

This Entire Complex For Sale

Once a thriving little shopping area with a couple of restaurants, toy store, barber shop, beauty shop, and more is now for sale. After the stores closed, many Lab offices and private contractors for the Labs had offices here. Rumor had it that these would torn down and condo put in their place. That was before the banking slow down and bale outs. There is, however, a thriving daycare center currently at one end of this complex.

Another New White Rock Business?

A really interesting sign for another new business in White Rock. I have NO idea what kind of business it is but I'll find out. I was more intrigued by the design on their sign. The building originally originally a bank branch and later a veterinary clinic. While there are new businesses opening up in White Rock and Los Alamos, several well known businesses in town are going out of business. (Hear that this is a cyber-security business.)

The Hive - New Business Center in White Rock

The Hive's grand opening in a few days. This is a new business where inventors, crafters, lab researchers, and local clubs can rent space and meeting rooms by the day, week or month.  With a new paint job, this building was a movie theater, the White Roxy. The building has housed a veterinarian clinic, restaurants, LANL office spaces, and a Lutheran church in recent years.

Early Morning Snow

Very early morning snow scene Saturday morning (12-3) is the first of a couple of storms and very cold weather predicted over next several days. Brrrrrrrr! PS. Enough snow last night and predicted today that the Los Alamos schools and national labs are closed today (Monday). Single digit temps predicted tonight.

New LAHS. It Was Time

Much good learning and fond memories in the old LAHS....but it was time make room for the new. In looking around the new campus and at the old buildings...I predict it will not be long for more face lifts and changes at LAHS. The older buildings just don't fit in anymore.  I hope to get inside during and open house and take post some interior pictures in the near future.

New LAHS As Viewed From The Science Wing

View of the new LAHS building from the Science Wing at the end of E wing looking towards the north west. D wing would have been just to the right of this view...but is no more.

New LAHS On The Southside

On the south side of LAHS is a large court yard in front of this south entrance to the "commons area." This is about where B and C wings use to be. This picture taken from the west end of E wing for those in the know.

New LAHS North Side

Looking east from the main entrance on the north side of the new LAHS. This is where B and C wings use to be. To the left, out of sight, is Smith Auditorium and the old cafeteria. In distance is the large NE entrance where C wing use to be. It's a two story commons area (I think). Behind is more building where D wing use to be.
Students are scheduled to "occupy" classrooms starting second semester in Jan 2012. It's going to be close.

New LAHS Main Entrance

New LAHS main entrance is on the north west side of the building. For those familiar with LAHS, this picture taken from the awning above Smith (Civic) Auditorium entrance looking at what use to be A wing with the IMC to the right.

THIS is the Main Entrance to LAHS?

During demolition and transformation and rebuilding of all of B, C, D and half of A wings at LASH, this was the main entrance...in the back of the building. THINGS ARE ABOUT TO CHANGE. The taped paper sign now says, "No Access." So, now what?

Backyard PiƱon Jay Invasion

Took a short Thanksgiving vacation from posting pictures. I'm still looking for anyone wanting to take over Los Alamos Daily Photo. Between work and having posted over 400 photos, I sometimes run out of pictures. However, this is only part of 20 PiƱon Jays in the backyard.

Tunnel Under Diamond Drive

After surrounding walls were engineered to slow flash floods and prevent erosion, the tunnel under the landfill bridge was widened to allow water to pass through without damaging Diamond Drive above.

Pueblo Canyon Brigde? Dam?

Landfill "bridge" where Diamond Drive crosses Pueblo Canyon. After Cerro Grande Fire in 2000, it was deemed unsafe. It is neither a dam nor a bridge. So, some engineering and construction needed to be done to protect it from damage due to flash flooding.(I assume the recent Las Conchas fire would have triggered the same construction had it not been done after 2000).

New Municipal Building Foundation

The previous municipal building was built in a hurry by federal government in the 60s I think. It's foundation proved unstable and the two story building was condemned.Currently the county government is scattered around town in portable structures. (Los Alamos is a Home Rule county. City and county are one.) Hopefully, this new foundation is much much more stable.

The Last of the Cement Caves

Demolition of "cement caves" apartment built in the 50's (I think) to house Los Alamos scientists to make room for new municipal building.

Horse Trails In White Rock

Horse trails are found in La Senda and Pajarito Acres. Hikers, bikers, and runners also use they trails between the 2 and 5 acre lots and homes. Trails are maintained by the home owners associations.

Three Yolk Egg

Is this good luck or bad? From PoultryHelp.com  The record is 9 yolks. Many of the largest/heaviest eggs are multi-yolked. Except from winning the lottery jackpot, nothing lucky or unlucky happened as a result of eating this egg other than I lost the lottery ticket.

Sandhill Cranes heading south. A sure sign that winter is coming.
