Fall Colors Above Los Alamos

Fall colors on Pajarito Mountain above Los Alamos due to quaking aspen and one of the scrub oaks stands in the a spruce-fir forest (or mixed-conifer forest). Note: Heavy rains last night and this AM. The show of color might be over. I took the photo just in time!

Bandelier National Monument

Just down the road from White Rock, NM (about 7 miles on NM 4), is the entrance to Bandelier National Monument which leads to lots of back country wilderness areas and Frijoles Canyon where you find the headquarters, Tyuonyi, museum, and many other preserved ruins.

King Tut's Chariot?

Came up behind this car just outside Taos on way home to Los Alamos from Denver where we toured the King Tut exhibit this weekend. I agreed with the personalized licence plate.

Where Did All The Buildings Go?

 

"They" use to say, "Nothing ever changes in Los Alamos." All the Los Alamos County and Public School buildings and warehouses are now gone from Trinity Drive to create the Trinity Site Revitalization Project. Where did they go? See Pajarito Cliffs area below (use to be called the Airport Basin)

October night still warm enough for some night tennis. All 4 courts were busy tonight at Urban Park.

Bandelier Is Tuff? Who says?

Top: Looking east, across the Rio Grande Rift to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Los Alamos Canyon Bridge (also known as Omega Bridge). Los Alamos sits on several mesas formed by Bandelier tuff - volcanic ash-flows.

Tuff is compressed volcanic ash flow and is easily carved out for cliff dwellings (see below). Lighter forms of the frothy lava called pumice is everywhere. Obsidian and hard dense basalt from lava flows also makes up the land we live on. See more at Geology of the Pajarito Plateau.

Doves on a Wire

Mourning Doves (in my backyard). One of the many birds species on the Pajarito Plateau. Pajarito means little bird or baby bird in Spanish. Wonder what they are thinking? And, who decides they sit facing the same direction? NOTE: Actually, upon closer look they are White Winged Doves - extending their range north I guess. (See pics below)

Fine Art In and Around Ashley Pond (Pond?)

Sculpture in Ashley Pond in Los Alamos. The pond was named after Ashley Pond, the founder of the Los Alamos Ranch School. Local question, "Is it Ashley Pond or Ashley Pond Pond?" It was joke back in the Ranch School days. Notice in the previous link, playing hockey in shorts, that they wore all year long.

Up, Up, and Away!

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the largest hot air balloon rally in the world, ends this weekend. Pictures taken 10-5-2010 on way to Albuquerque airport. Since I was still north of I-40, I define that as northern NM - just for this posting, that is ;-) There's also the America's Challenge Gas Balloon Race, You can find more photos searching Google images for special shapes, video,  and at the Fiesta's photo gallery.

Does ANYBODY Do This? How?

Following this truck up the Main Hill Road to Los Alamos. Does anyone stay 200 feet back from the back of a slow moving truck?  First of all, you can't read the sign until you get withing 20 feet (see enlarged view of sign in lower left). 200 feet is 2/3 of a football field! That's 15 car lengths! If you stay back that far, cars behind you start honking or passing you. The photo below is of the Main Hill Road (right) leading to Los Alamos. (Lower road is gravel road leading into Pueblo Canyon.)
